Are pipe threads always tapered?

No. Many pipe threads are tapered for sealing, but there are also straight or parallel pipe threads used with gaskets or O-ring faces, such as NPS, BSPP, and certain metric parallel forms. Your sealing method dictates whether you need tapered or straight threads.

Is PTF the same as NPT?

PTF often refers to the SAE “dryseal” form (commonly written NPTF), which is not the same as standard NPT. NPTF is designed to seal without sealant by controlling crest and root truncation, while NPT typically requires a sealant; they share pitch and taper but are not functionally identical.

What pipe threads are not tapered?

National Pipe Straight (NPS), British Standard Pipe Parallel (BSPP/G), and various metric parallel threads are straight. These usually rely on a gasket, washer, or O-ring at a sealing face rather than thread interference.

How to tell if a thread is tapered?

Measure the outside diameter across a few threads: on a tapered thread, the diameter decreases slightly toward the end. You can also compare the part against a straightedge and look for a small gap, check markings/specs (e.g., NPT/NPTF or R for BSPT), or use a thread gauge set that identifies taper versus parallel.
